Obituary

Donald "Don" E. Meyer of Hickory Flat in the City of Woodstock, Georgia, passed away peacefully on August 24, 2022, at the age of 90, with his loving wife Betty, son Brett, and daughter-in-law Stephanie, by his side.

Don was born on May 31,1932 in Wanamingo Township, Minnesota. After spending his formative years working on a farm and spending school, he decided to join the Navy on March 23, 1951.

He served his country honorably for 23 years and retired in the rank of Chief Petty Officer on May 31, 1974. Don’s awards and decorations include the Navy Achievement Medal, Navy Unit Commendation Medal, Good Conduct Medal with 4 Bronze Stars, National Defense Service Medal, Vietnam Service Medal, Republic of Vietnam Gallantry Cross, and Republic of Vietnam Campaign Medal with 1960’s device. After his retirement he worked for another 22 years as a helicopter mechanic with the Sea and Air Rescue Department and heavy equipment mechanic with the Public Works Department at NAS Oceana in Virginia Beach, VA.

Dedication to family was at the core of Don's life as a husband, dad, brother, uncle, Pop-Pop, Dun-Dun, and Paw-Paw. He was preceded in death by his mother, Olive Fisher and three brothers Richard, Dennis, and Robert. He is survived by his wife Betty and her sons Brett, Scott, and Robin, stepsons Bruce and Steve from a previous marriage along with six grandchildren and three great grandchildren. He is also survived by his sister Darlene and numerous nieces, nephews, and extended family.

Selfless service was just one of Don's many gifts. As a caring Dad, he was very active in youth sports while Brett was growing up. He helped develop the Green Run Little League Program in Virginia Beach, VA, and coached youth football. He truly enjoyed his work in these youth activities and was always there with thoughtful, motivating, kind words for the kids. His selfless service extended to several organizations such as Life Member of Vietnam Veterans Association of America, the VFW, and the Fleet Reserve Association. He was also a Life Member in Perpetuity in Kempsville Masonic Lodge #196, Virginia Beach, VA, and the Grand Lodge of Masons of Virginia. He was also Past District Deputy of Masons, District 56, VA. Emeritus Member of Hickory Flat Masonic Lodge No. 205, Hickory Flat, GA and the Grand Lodge of Masons in GA.

A memorial service for Donald will be held Saturday, September 10, 2022 from 2:00 PM to 3:00 PM at Hickory Flat United Methodist Church, 4056 E Cherokee Dr, Canton, GA 30115. A committal service will occur Tuesday, September 13, 2022 at 9:00 AM at Georgia National Cemetery, 1080 Scott Hudgens Dr, Canton, GA 30114.
