Obituary

Roger Elliot Cort, age 86, of Virginia Beach, Virginia passed away on Monday, October 31, 2022. He was born in Paterson, New Jersey on October 28, 1936. He was preceded in death by his parents Dr. Elliot and Caroline Cort, a brother Dr. David Cort, a sister Dorothy Billups and a daughter Patricia Fuchs.

Mr. Cort retired as a Senior Chief Petty Officer with the U.S. Navy after twenty-one years of service. He also retired as a superintendent of commercial construction after thirty years. He was a Mason for fifty-seven years and a Past Master of Kempsville and Bayside Masonic Lodges. He also served as Deputy Grand Master of District 56 in Virginia Beach in 2010, and Grand Tiler of The Grand Lodge of Virginia in 2014. He was also a member of Khedive Shrine and Hillbillies Unit, Scottish Rite, Order of the Eastern Star Kempsville #173, American Legion #274 in Maryland, VFW Post #8133, Royal Arch Masons, and Fleet Reserve #166.

Survivors include his loving and devoted wife of forty-eight years, Janet Cort, a son Gregory Cort, a step-daughter Denise R. Claffy; several grandchildren and great grandchildren and nieces and nephews.

The family will receive friends on Sunday, November 6, 2022 from 2 to 4 p.m. at Smith & Williams Funeral Home, Kempsville Chapel.

A Celebration of Life will be held on Monday, November 7, 2022 1:30p.m. at the funeral home. Interment will follow at Woodlawn Memorial Gardens.

Serving as honorary pallbearers will be Wayne Flora, Steve Ridgeway and Leonard Provost and active pallbearers will be Joseph Baki, Ken Church, Chris Anders, Tom Ricks, Mike Gribble and Stephen Claffy.
